About MindfulMinis Mindful Youth and Our Mission

Why Mindfulness?

I have developed these groups because as the mother of an autistic child who had severe mental health problems and who did not get any support or understanding growing up, I have always seen a real gap in support for children and young people experiencing low self-esteem, low emotional resilience and negative self-image.

This can happen at school, in social settings or at home.

These issues often happen due to them becoming overwhelmed, over or under stimulated and not being given the skills or time to regulate in a way suitable for them.

When a child is struggling in this way negative behaviours can happen towards themselves, towards others and can be hard for the child and others around them to deal with.

Schools rarely have time to concentrate on identifying one child’s triggers and accommodating their sensory and emotional needs so often focus on punishment which is not helpful. The waiting time for children referred to health support services are often years long leaving them and families stranded with behaviour they don’t understand and don’t know how to help with.

Mindful Minis and Mindful Youth are the best of both worlds; an experienced, passionate support worker leading groups that are informal but structured and focused on developing your child’s emotional regulation and encouraging self-acceptance and increasing confidence. They will learn and practice skills that will help them face real life issues that can overwhelm and distress them.

Every young person is different; they will have different needs, abilities, triggers and backgrounds but every child is able to develop mindfulness.

They deserve to feel heard valued and empowered

Different ways i've identified this need

As well as having an autistic child who is now 23, I have also worked within special educational provisions and mainstream schools. I know the pressure they are under and why they just don’t have the resources or time to identify a child’s needs in detail or spend time de-escalating and teaching them coping skills.

I found my child was bullied for his behaviours that came about due to his needs not being met. This developed into severe anxiety about going to school, social exclusion and isolation.

We spent 10 years getting referred, discharged, rereferred etc over and over before a diagnosis happened. This came at a very dark time where he was serious harming himself in distress on a regular basis and was in hospital many times due to this.

Developing a positive self-esteem as well as the ability to identify when they are going into crisis is so useful. It means they can progress how they feel, use methods to de-escalate and regulate themselves and then, once calm, can reflect and understand that they are able to cope with life’s issues and that they are strong.

It’s a cycle - the more they are able to cope and develop resilience, the more capable and confident they feel in all area of life.
